EARTH SONG - "Help us. You... you ... you... you... us ... WE"

"What if that one in the mirror isn't me? He feels separate. He sees problems 'out there' to be solved... But I don't feel that way -- those problems aren't 'out there', not really. I feel them inside me. A child crying in Ethiopia, a sea gull struggling pathetically in an oil spill, a mountain gorilla being mercilessly hunted, a teenage soldier trembling with terror when he hears the planes fly over: Aren't these happening in me when I see and hear about them?"

"I respect the secrets and magic of nature. That's what makes me so angry when I see these things that are happening in our world. That every second I hear the size of a football field is torn down in the Amazon. I mean, that kind of stuff really bothers me. That's why I write these kinds of songs. You know, to give some sense of awareness and awakening and hope to people... I really feel that nature is trying so hard to compensate for man's mismanagement of the planet. The planet is sick. Like a fever. If we don't fix it now, it's at the point of no return. This is our last chance to fix this problem that we have, or it's like a runaway train. And the time has come; this is it. People are always saying, "Oh," they think, "They'll take care of it." "The government'll do..." "They'll..." They who?? It starts with us. It's US! Or else it'll never be done." ~ Michael Jackson [first quote from 'Dancing the Dream', second from 2009]

"Help us. You... you ... you... you... us ... WE"

This past week, Joe Vogel (author of the upcoming book "Man in the Music") posted a sneak preview and then ebook entitled "Earth Song: Inside Michael Jackson's Magnum Opus". (Please see his website for details). He tells the story of how "Earth Song" came to be, from its beginnings in Vienna during the Bad Tour, through it's completion and inclusion on the HIStory album and many stunning performances (such as Brunei in 1996 - see video below). Vogel also writes about the strangely underwhelming reviews it received, especially in America, where it seems to have been too "anti-corporate, anti-nature-raping, so it was prone to censorship" (as Bill Bottrell was quoted as saying). For those who were fans back then, you will probably remember the utter bewilderment as to why "Earth Song" wasn't released as a single in the U.S. while it topped charts in over fifteen other countries. You might get angry, as many are. But instead of just getting angry, let's get even ... i.e. let's balance this injustice and correct it, not only by spreading the truth about Michael, but by LISTENING to the messages he wanted us to hear. And beyond all else, let's DO SOMETHING. Let's follow in his footsteps and then lead the next generation. For Michael. For us all.
